Similac is a high energy infant formula by Abbott Nutrition for infants under the age of 18 months. Similac 200ml can be used as a sole source of nutrition for young infants as it is a balanced nutritional drink which also provides 200 kcal of energy. Similac should not be used in infants or young children who exceed 8kg of body weight.

Similac High Energy is a high energy infant formula specifically designed to promote the growth and development of babies with, or at risk of, faltering growth (failure to thrive), as it offers:

Similac Indication

Similac High Energy is a Food for Special Medical Purposes and should be used under medical supervision. It is available on prescription for babies with, or at risk of, faltering growth, which can result from an inadequate energy intake, or an inability to meet increased nutritional needs. It can also be useful for babies who are fluid restricted.

Similac High Energy is suitable for use as a sole source of nutrition for oral or tube feeding in infants up to 8kg in weight (or 18 months of age). For older infants, it can be fed from a cup or mixed with cereal and other solid foods.

Similac High Energy is available in a 200ml reclosable plastic bottle and a 120ml glass bottle, which are suitable for oral and/or tube feeding:

  • Bottle necks fit standard teats for easy bottle feeding (always sterilise teat unit, or use an unopened single use teat), or product can be decanted into a sterilised feeding bottle.
  • Bottles attach directly onto Abbott Nutrition giving sets, or can be decnated into a tube feeding container for babies who require feeding via a tube.
  • Can also be decanted into a cup for oral feeding, or added to cereal and other solid foods to support weaning.

Preparation Guide

  • Thoroughly wash your hands and clean the surface you are going to use
  • Sterilise all utensils to be used in preparing the feed according to manufacturer’s instructions or boil for 10 minutes.
  • Always sterilise teat unit, or use an unopened, single use teat. These attach directly to the 120ml and 200ml bottle necks.
  • Shake well and check best before date before use. A “click” should be noted when opening the 120ml glass bottle.
  • If appropriate, pour the correct amount of Similac High Energy into the sterilised bottle, feeding cup or tube feed container. The 120ml and 200ml bottles will attach directly to all Abbott Nutrition giving sets, if required for tube feeding.
  • Give at room temperature or warm by placing bottle in warm water, then checking temperature of feed.
  • Do not heat in a microwave oven.
  • Throw away unfinished feeds within 2 hours.
  • Any unused formula must be covered, refrigerated immediately, and used within 24 hours.

Contraindications

  • Not suitable for infants or young children with galactosaemia
  • Not for parenteral (intravenous) use

Does Similac contain cow’s milk protein?

Similac High Energy does contain cow’s milk protein and therefore is unsuitable for infants who have an allergy to cow’s milk protein.

Does Similac infant formula contain wheat, gluten, nuts, egg or fish?

Similac infant formula does not contain any of these ingredients.

Does Similac contain soy?

Similac does contain soy and therefore is unsuitable for infants who have a soy allergy.

What is Similac for?

Does Similac High Energy contain lactose?

Similac, like all other UK infant formulations does contain lactose as this is a source of carbohydrates. For this reason, Similac is not suitable for children who suffer from lactose intolerance and or galactosaemia.

Is Similac suitable for Vegetarians?

Similac is a vegetarian product though not strictly vegan. Similac contains vitamin D which is sourced from oil’s on sheep’s wool and some strict vegetarians may consider this is be meat.

What is faltering growth in infants?

Faltering growth is a term associated to children of all ages who do not achieve their expected growth potential. The most common reason why young children suffer from faltering growth is due to having inadequate energy levels usually due to restricted calorie intake. A diet which is restricted in the intake of food and drink is likely to restrict calorie intake and contribute towards faltering growth.

Similac High Energy is suitable from children who find it difficult to intake the necessary food and drink to achieve optimum growth and development.

Does Similac contain nucleotides and if so, what are they?
